Hugh played first team rugby with Bective Rangers F.C. in the early 1980's. Bective, who are this year celebrating the 125th anniversary of their foundation, have a long and respected position in Leinster and Irish rugby having produced many quality players and top administrators. To mark this significant milestone in the club's history, a Gala Ball was held in Jurys Hotel, Ballsbridge last Saturday, 4th November. The gathering was addressed by Peter Boyle, President of the Irish Rugby Football Union (I.R.F.U.), and by Mark MacParland, Bective's President. In his address, Mark referred to Hugh's forthcoming solo marathon and, in seeking member support, proceeded to present the very surprised Hugh with Bective's donation of €500 to Self Help and wishing him Bon Voyage on his adventure.
